The heart of the Tiger

It was 1993. From UST High School, I enrolled at UST’s Faculty of Arts and Letters to study Journalism. It was also this year that the Tigers won its first UAAP basketball tourney after years of championship drought. I am no basketball fan, but expect me to join the sea of yellow and white at the Big Dome to make that thunderous tsunami we call Tiger Roar!
The 1993 championship was followed by three more championships. Our batch was lucky to have experienced four championships all throughout our four-year college life at the University. Or was our batch the lucky charm of the University as when we left UST, the championships were no more?
But of all championships, this year’s was the greatest! As of this writing, I still couldn’t believe that we made it. There were no signs of a championship at the start of the season. The Tigers were the dark horse, and in terms of talent, admittedly, the other teams had more talented players.
I always keep myself posted on UST’s rally at the UAAP even right after I graduated. Not that I was disappointed with our team’s lackluster performance for the past years but it came to a point of acceptance. “Yeah, it’s not our time yet,” I said to myself. Probably, we could do a four-peat feat in another decade or two. Yup, that was my grim forecast.
So when we won last Monday, the feeling was one hair-raising, heart-pumping, and mind-boggling, totally unexplainable experience! My sensibilities were rattled by the fact that I was not even expecting that we would make it to the final cut. I was the happiest that I was proven wrong.
It’s the heart. It was really the heart that gave us this championship. This is one inspiring championship for all Tomasians as it came out of the blue, literally, out of the Blue Eagles’ one big fight.
